Allen’s hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin) is a species of hummingbird in the Trochilidae family that breeds in the western United States. It is common only in the brushy woods, gardens, and meadows of coastal California from Santa Barbara north, and southern coastal Oregon.
Like all hummingbirds, Allen’s hummingbird’s high rate of metabolism requires it to feed frequently. It drinks nectar from flowers and eats any small insects in flight or on flower blossoms, providing needed protein.
